Amorous Owl Finch...

Hi Forum--

So my little owl pair are doing very well, we're settled in about a month or so.
My problem now is that the male seems to be very intent on mating. I've watched them mate in front of me a handful of times, and the past 2 days I noticed the male chasing the female around the cage floor, trying to mount her.

There's no nest in the cage. Is this normal behavior for these guys, or is he stressing my female out?

Thanks in advance!

They may simply be on a different page.

She's had a lot to deal with in this last little while, so she may not be quite as excited about starting a family yet.

Him? He just wants sex :-* :YMHUG: :YMSMUG:

Were you thinking of breeding them?

I had bought a pair at one time the male was so nasty to the other one they were in with my sweet society and he would dive bomb society and aggressively attack the female (if it was a female)they were fine while in quartine but as soon as I put them in the large flight cage (3 f030 cages) he was MEAN.talked to pet sore I bought him from and they took them back and gave me a store credit and bought my first gouldians with it,I loved those owls but after that experience I would never buy again.

There is always one rotten apple in the bunch.

In my experience, the Owls are sweet little guys, I and haven't had any problems whatsoever with them.

Maybe you simply got one who was a psycho bird, I mean it happens.

I'm not necessarily against breeding them, I just wasn't planning on it for now. I've upped the calcium in the cage, because I'm assuming she's going to be laying eggs sooner or later. I'd probably just remove any eggs laid, for now.

Barbara--that is awful!! So sorry to hear about your experience with owls :(
One of my female gouldians is severely aggressive when handled...I'm waiting for the day she draws blood :)

GouldieFledge Ohhh that's OK I hope you have luck with your pair they do have very cute little faces and I love there sound. All my cages are huge flight cages so like to put more then two birds in them.I think that is why society are my fav. They just love everybody so right now I have 6 society with 2 female gouldians one away from her mate for a while he wanted to breed again, and one that I rescued quite a while ago and she is finally going thru a good molt that her feathers are coming in around her head and neck (previous owner had her in with a zebra finch)

Yes, I do.

I have a pair, one of their daughters (had 2 daughters, but sadly lost one) and an extra bird, which I was hoping was another male, but I'm not sure.

Here they are...
