Should I get a mate for my lone male finch???

Post by Liz » Sat May 06, 2017 5:43 pm

Hi

I'm very new to forums so I hope someone can help me.

I bought male and female zebra finches about 4 months ago and the female suddenly started attacking the male. She plucked out all his feathers and wouldn't let him in their nest.

I removed the nest and this did not help. I eventually removed the female and gave her to a friend.

my little male fretted for a couple of days but now he seems fine. He's eating, singing, drinking and bouncing about the cage happily every day. All his feathers have grown back and he's thriving.

Now my question is, should I try him with another female??

He does still call for a mate but he is generally happy.

I'm worried that if I add another female to the cage that the same might happen again.

I hope someone can help me and give me some advise.

Hi Liz, and welcome to the Forum.

Why not get him a male friend if you're concerned?

Thanks Elana for your reply.

Will another male not fight with him?

After a period of quarantine (for newbie), I would remove your resident boy from the main cage and put him somewhere safe for a few minutes.

Take everything out of the main cage, wash it all to remove any scents or debris. Rearrange the cage around, moving the perches around, the feeding and watering stations (make sure there is 2 of everything). If there is a nest, remove it (nests make them territorial), hang some fake plants in there, to give it a new look. Add 2 swings at different ends of the cage, and 2 sleeping perches high up, at the same height.

At this point, take a deep breath and place both males into the cage at the same time.

Usually that tends to work fairly well.

Good luck.
