Say hello to Emoji and Box (my first gouldians)

Post by andiok » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:42 pm

Hi there. So this weekend i see an ad on Kijiji about gouldians and being with just javas and a pair of canaries for now, i jumped on it.
The guy only had youngs and this blue female Emoji :P (my son comes up with this original names, our canaries names are Scaredy Cat and Kleenex)
the guy had a flock of 10-12gouldians and they were in a decent size aviary.
Now the guy only had one old male and to sister females from the original birds (one of the sisters was Emoji) so that is why i didnt pick to youngs, they would have been siblings or step siblings. I know they are related anyways but at least not siblings.

Now im new to gouldians so any advice is really appreciated
here is them.

this is supposed to be the male (i think i saw him singing for a bit)
the guy said he will be a red head and im really hoping for it

Box would be a split to blue because his mom was blue so,,

Congratulations on the new birdies.

Your boy looks like a Purple breast, Green back..... I can't tell the head colour yet.

Is your girl a Yellow head?

Nice birds

If his mom was a blue back, he must be split to it.

@"Ricardo Ronsini"
Thx guys.
Elana, the girl is supposed to be a yellow head but like I said the guy was not very knowledgeable, plus his Russian English was very hard for me to understand. What do you think from the pics Elana??
On the other hand I'm not better then him when it comes to gouldians so

Recardo the boys mom according to the owner was same as my female (sister and bb) so yes the boy is supposed to be a split to blue but who knows. Honestly I love wild red heads goulds but the only reason why I didn't pick up any other youngs was that the whole flock was related, so didn't want any siblings due to very close inbred. At least the female is an aunt and not a sister. I'll try to find another pair and that will fix my issue. The boy won't be ready in awhile anyways

You're boy has a couple months to go, he's just a juvie baby :D who hasn't moulted yet.

As to your girl, I honestly don't know.
Debbie might be able to help you there.

It is impossible to know without the genetic background of a Blue gouldian which head color Red or Yellow, they both look the same.
Male is way too young to even guess at which color.

Best of luck

Thanks for the info
Any tips on what keeping healthy bluebacks.
I'm reading lots and seems they're a bit picky, well not more then the goldfinches anyways but please fill me in if I'm missing anything.
I'm providing
1.quality seeds
2. My own eggfood mixed with multivitamin, mineral, spirulina, kelp, bee pollen, vit d3 extra.
Also 2-3 days of fruits and greens

Thanks

Personally I do not find them to be any harder then the others. Mostly it will depend on the breeding stock they come from. Some breeders were breeding Blue to Blue to increase their stock quickly, those may be weaker then others.
I would go easy on all the supplements. Too much can be as bad as not enough. The multivitamin should have more then enough d3. When you put so much in the eggfood your going to have more chance of it going off so don't leave it in the cage all day. My eggfood has nothing but egg and handfeeding formula in it to dry it up a bit. I spread out thinly on a dish so that it dries out rather then spoils. I can leave it till next morning when I switch it out with new. You probably would be better off rotating the supplements rather then all all the time. Personally I didn't find any difference in my birds when I tried the spirulia and/or kelp. Never used bee pollen. The mineral mix is in a separate container so they can get it whenever they need, not sure I would mix that in my eggfood.

All the best
