Societies in mixed aviary

Post by sparrowsong98 » Sat Sep 02, 2017 1:54 pm

Hi
I want to expand my finches, and I have a cage picked out and everything else, but there is just one thing. I like societies, and do not want more zebs if I can help it. Can I add societies in with my zebs? The hen plucks, but she is becoming much less of a plucker, and I think I have almost fixed her. And, should I add one zeb and one sociiety pair, or two soc pairs, or just one soc pair? Please tell me, I do not want to get the wrong mix of birds and have trouble.
I currently own:
An Australian shepherd
Many chickens
4 goats
A cat
And a bunny

I house my Societies with some of my Zebras without any major problems. I mean you get the occasional squabbles, and once in a while a Society might lose a couple of tail feathers, but no murder and mayham.

I would opt for more Societies than Zebras, to make sure that the Zebras don't get too bossy.

it all depends on the society's if they are timid or not

if you can buy them from an mixed avairy this is better they will stand up to the zebs but I would go for two pairs rather than one

I would get one male and 3 females tho as they will make a 4 some pair and he will breed with all three with no fighting also they will stick together more and finally more chance of chicks being strong being fed by 4 parents not one haha

:D

Fraza The soc in that picture is a crested. They are fairly common. You would have to find a crested to breed them i believe

Fraza

Hi Fraser,

I didn't breed this cute little boy, I saw him and his brother and couldn't resist them. They are both quite adorable.

Fraza You need a crested to breed more cresteds. It occurred originally as a spontaneous mutation in Japan from non-crested birds, but normally can only be produced by a pairing of at least one crested parent. It takes only one to get babies with the trait.

half babies will be crested with a crested parent, about 80% if you have two crested parents. But two crested parents breeding results in imperfect, kinda ugly bed-head type crests in some of the babies.
