Quail

I've got a question about Quail--
My aviary is in an unheated building, and the aviary itself is 6'x16'. I've got about 30 canaries in it. I got interested in Quail, specifically the Northern Bobwhite since it is well able to handle some cold temperatures. I don't have any, but I did figure out where to get some.
Are there any concerns with having a few Quail on the floor of a finch aviary? Diseases or bugs?
thanks

I've raised well over 200 bobwhite quail. They can handle the cold temperatures. They are MUCH larger then button quail and I would not recommend housing finch or canary with them.

Dave I have heard that they will kill fledgeligs of finches or canarys if they land on the floor maybe if u could create an area where the quails can't get to and where he fledglings can't go past

Bobwhite quail do best in a covey of at least 6, more is better.

debbie276@Fraza, thanks.
I hadn't thought about canaries just out of the nest and living on the floor for a day or two. I can see where that would be a problem.
Aren't Button Quail (not really a Quail but they look like one) too tender to have in an aviary that is below 32° F (0° C) on some winter days?

debbie276, do they fly up so they'd be higher in the aviary, or do they stay on the ground?
Thanks for the pictures!

I've made piles of branches here and there on our property so they can get away from fox and hawks around here. They will sleep in there at night but I've also seen them roosting in the pine trees. They nest on the ground though.
Unless they are startled the whole covey walk single file place to place

I've got 5 acres on top of a mountain, they come and go. Used to have many wild ones around so we're kind of repopulating the mountain. All the neighbors watch out for them, give treats and let them continue on their way.
If I wanted them to stay and not roam they would do well in a LARGE aviary.

Button quails sold as pets
are really small true quails, there is an unrelated group known by the same name but these are not available.
