Hi there, I've wanted a Java sparrow for sometime, but I was wondering, do they go ok with goldfinches zebra finches, canaries and Chinese quail? Also would they be ok with cockatiels and budgies?
I probably won't get one at the time being mainly because my new aviary is not yet complete but I just thought it would be good to know, thank you for taking your time to read this post.

Java finches are often a bit pushy, so they should be able to hold their own against other birds without being too feisty; I have a pair that I keep in a flight with societies and gouldians when not breeding. Be careful introducing them to canaries due to air sac mites, and consider using SCATT preventatively.
I have heard both that budgies and other small hookbills are fine with finches in an avairy, and that hookbills may terrorize other birds just for the heck of it. Breeding finches in the same enclosure as hookbills could backfire, with the hookbills destroying the finch nests or becoming territorial. I hear that female hookbills are typically more aggressive than the males.

Hi there, I have just gotten a new aviary which will be for all my hook bills and the aviary will just be for straight Bills. I have had to seperate birds at various times and I always have to have my 2 finch pairs seperate. But luckily I have lots of cages and I watch my birds carefully. The aviary is a reasonable size and there is a lot of stuff to keep them occupied.

It sounds like they'll be fine, then. Just watch out for those few trouble birds that enjoy picking on everyone.

Haha ok, my only troublesome birds would be rainbow my turquoisine, sometimes he gets a bit silly- for instance trying to breed with my canaries and chasing my quails around but I literally only have to stick him in a cage for 5 min and then let him back out and he's new bird again and he leaves everyone alone. And I also have to watch out for my flightless budgie as she has a thing with finch boxes....

Also Java sparrows I'm looking at are too young to tell gender so would either gender be ok?

Birds can be a bit odd, can't they?
Either sex should be fine. I've only ever had two Java finches, but they both seem similar in temperament. The female has a harsher voice and is more talkative around breeding season, while the male is ever so slightly pushier.
