I would very much like to buy a cordon bleu finch or even a common waxbill. My question is this-Would it be mean to buy just a single finch of one species and put it in with other compatible birds? I would like to know if anyone else just has one of a particular type and do they do okay or do they always have to be in pairs? The reason I am asking is because I can afford only to buy one at a time.
Thanks for any input.

Re: Single Finch
They will be fine with another species as long as they are compatible.
I have a female shaftail in my aviary with no male and I also have one silverbill (a hen I think) that is alone without a male.
They do fine. In fact, I have had no problems with my shaftail once I removed the cock.
I just wouldn't leave it alone without any other finch. They are sociable and happier with company.

Single finches will buddy up with other species if they don't have one of their own kind available. Any time you mix species, you have to watch for compatibility, so it is better to stick with the passive species. Also, try to not have three birds in a cage--this often leads to two of them being buddies and picking on the third. CBs are great birds and get along with many other species.
