Our first Blue-capped Cordon Bleu fledgling from the current breeding season. I think this one is a male. He fledged Thanksgiving day. These pictures was taken today at 26 days old.

Oh my....
He is sooooo cute.
Do they come out greyish, then molt into blue? Or is it just the lighting?
How many babies in this clutch?

It is just the lighting. I didn't want to blast him with the flash. He is a very light blue, and then by 4-6 months old it is the darker blue.
There were just two eggs in this clutch and one was not fertile. They are sitting on three new eggs now.

Congrats to you, blue caps are not necessarily the easiest of Estrildid finches to breed and so a big well done to yer is well deserved

This guy was fostered by our Societies. Last year the male BCCB kept tossing chicks so we started using the Societies to foster them. Not sure if we will give them another try this year unless we have no choice.

End of the day I personally think that regardless to the fact they have been fostered there very much still a worthy achievement that I'm sure many would be very pleased with,
Well done

a_gouldian - Congratulations on your first boy of the breeding season! I'm so happy for you! There are still no blue caps available around here but I'm eternally hopeful.
Can't wait to see how many you will be able to breed this year. Are you still in contact with the people who bought last season's young ones? Are they all doing well?

Thanks Isobea. Haven't heard from the people that we sold our previous BCCB fledglings to and I hope they are all doing well.

Thanks Sally. We discovered last night that one of the three eggs hatched in the Cordon Bleus nest. Hoping that the male will not toss and that they feed the chick(s). They are on their own with this clutch because the timing wasn't right to have this clutch fostered.

Wishing you the best of luck with these hatchlings. Hopefully the parents figured out how to do it right this time around.
Keep the meal worms and egg food coming.

a_gouldian - oh wow, a brand new hatchling. Congratulations! I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you that this time they will raise their young successfully.
What are you feeding them? Are they possibly like the strawberry finches I used to have who tossed their chicks if I didn't replenish the mini mealworms several times a day?
