Emblema picta - Painted Finch
I possibly have an opportunity to get these finches in January. Can somebody tell me if these emblemas are loud? I've watched videos but there is little to compare the loudness to.

Out of curiosity I watched a few videos of them singing. I can only compare them to what I have (gouldians who are soft singers & javas which are more robust singers).
They seem to me to be about mid range.
Then I found this interesting site . It has lots of songs and tells you if they are low, middle or non musical. This site lists them as 50% on the loudness scale.
They list them as the Painted Firetail

Yeah, I'm still looking at that page over my morning coffee. It's pretty neat. ;)
I just noticed you can play several species songs at the same time to see how they all sound in an aviary together. Wow. I clicked on all the songs at once (just for fun), and it sounds wild!
Wish they had more species calls listed.

The next question:
Where do Painted Firetails sleep? On top on fine twigs as owls do?

Re: Emblema picta - Painted Finch
Fernando - Hi, I took a little time to read up on them. It says they spend most of the time on or near the ground so need soft sand and soil as a substrate. It also says that since they spend a lot of time on the ground and search for their food there, hygiene is very important. Otherwise they might contract coccidiosis.
They almost never sit on twigs or small branches, so it is important to have a slightly elevated wider piece of wood (like a small board) or a very thick branch for them to sleep on.
Hope this helps,
Iso

Yes, thank you. Possibly we have read the same sources!
I wonder if someone who actually has them can tell a bit about them.

Re: Emblema picta - Painted Finch
Well, now I've got a pair. From two weeks of experience I can tell as far as here:
They are quite secretive birds, sleeping on the ground or near the ground on low twigs (as far in my little flight). As they are brown they are quite inconspicuous until a sun ray hits them. Not noisy at all - no continuous beeping like in so many other finches, the cock sings a few times a day for a short period with a loud and somehow melodious voice. But the same theme other grass finches do.
They don't engage in allopreening and sometimes sleep at their own. Daily activities are mostly done by both at the same time.
As I've learned that both of my birds are in molt now, their behaviour may change.
So take this information with a grain of salt.

Thank you Flight Feathers !
For those who want to have a closer look at my four birds, there is a blog https://entretantasplumas.wordpress.com/ where I update whenever there is something to tell. It's in spanish, though. But the images are international ... hope you like it.

Fernando - I love your blog. I scrolled through all the way down and even though I don't speak Spanish, I enjoyed it. You would think that after having lived in Southern California for 32 years, I would have learned some Spanish but I can only pick out certain words here and there. If I can ever get ahold of our next door neighbor (he is from Spain), I'll ask him to translate some of it.
Thanks for the link.

Iso, thank you! If you put 'entre tantas plumas' into a search machine you should be able to get a translated version?isobea wrote: Fernando - I love your blog.
