Bengelease and society

Post by Flight Feathers » Tue Jan 16, 2018 2:18 pm

So I thought bengelease and society finches were both the same thing. But when I went to the pet shop they seemed to think they were two different birds so I was wondering if there is at all a difference between bengelease and society finches? And if not, how did they end up with two different names? Thanks!

They are the same bird. We call them Societies in North America and Bengalese everywhere else. Bengalese is the dominant term because historically, we thought they came from Bengal. We now know they don't, they come from China and Japan, but the name sticks elsewhere.

I think the early importers called them society finches to demonstrate their social nature, which is their main appeal versus other more colorful finches.
