Hey guys it's me Nick again. The reason I am making this post is because I am seriously thinking about getting a gouldian finch to add to my collection. My questions and concerns are:
How easy are they to care for?
Can they be kept with other kinds of finches?
How friendly towards people are they?
Any tips, advice, and knowledge that you can provide me with on gouldian finches?




Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated by me. Thanks in advance.

FinchLover&Breeder Don't put a Gouldian with your Zebras, it may be picked on. One should be OK with the Society, they may even buddy up.

Hi Nick. Don't be hesitant to add a gouldian. They are beautiful and the males song is pleasant. They are similar in nature though to other finches in that they are best enjoyed for their beauty versus interacting with their owner! I know they are notoriously tough to breed but mine bred and raised a successful clutch of 4 right off the bat so who knows? Good luck!

ok. I'm seriously thinking of getting a Gouldian. I still have my society Oreo to keep i company. Ill probably get a Gouldian from finchman if we can agree and get it touch and stuff. I could use a few more pointers to keep from stressing to much though. Please guys...

I've only had two (well there was also Fleance but he/she had some intellectual disability and died), and they were somewhat aloof. Anyone who came near either of them was greeted with hissing and beak-fencing; the pair would even would argue with each other on occasion. However, they were otherwise fairly passive and didn't really do anything. Unlike the societies, my gouldians mostly hung out at the top 1/3 of the cage, so a wider cage is definitely important.

Some differences from other species:
-Gouldians do not need to raise their heads to drink
-Quiet song, difficult to hear from across room
-Hopping dance, both male and female vibrate heads during display
-Heavy compressed moult; will look horrible for a month or so per year
-More prone to iodine deficiency and air sac mites

ok. anything else you can think of to tell me about there care? you know what types of cages I have. Longer than tall and so on. I just dont want to mess up in their care.

Hi Nick--I'm new to the board, but old to birds. Gouldians are awesome, I have 24...and they are kept happily with my 13 canaries in my aviary. I would not put them with any other finch except maybe Javas, maybe Parrot Finches, and Bengalese/Societies.
They breed willingly, male does most of the work, the only thing to keep an eye on and regularly treat for airsac mites. Otherwise--their funny hopping dance when they want to mate, is hilarious and they have a lovely little song. I'm primarily a Canary person, but Gouldians have made it into my aviary and heart so much I'll never be without them again.

I have 4 young gouldian males with my society and canary
I originally had 1 gouldian male.
The society finches are real bullies to gouldian from my limited experience.

I am looking into having to separate my 4 current gouldian because the society r pretty relentless at harassing them. They chase them if they try to fly and they even harass them when they r just perching for no reason. I have a double flight cage with lots of perches and food dishes. No nests.

I would recommend from my limited experience gouldian and canary, no society finches.
