Hi everyone,

I came across two breeding pairs of Masked Grassfinch. They look so beautiful, in a classy « dressed » way like the Javan. I resisted the impulse of buying one pair, wanting to know more before making a decision.

They don’t seem common, but did anyone keep this species or used to ? What would be the minimum size for a flight cage for a pair? Can they be mixed? Any info would be cool really. Thsbks in advance!

Oh it’s first time I’ve heard of these but am guessing they would be similar to heck normal grassfinches

I have never own grassfinches or know someone who does/did. How do you house yours?

Uolym I first had them in a cage with zebras however it didn’t go well once the zebras laid eggs,typical zebras

Then I stuck them in the breeding cage along with 2 society’s and they get along really well and used to preen each other

But now I have them in the aviary mixed with stars,society,javas and they get along fine

Well I’m am very tempted, they seem hard to find at any giving time in Canada (Im in Montreal). I think I will wait until the breeding season is over for my birds and then add them if they are still available.

Uolym haha I can’t hanfle myself I’ve got so many bird son the last yr I had to selloads and just get my number to what I have got now I swear I’ve bought and sole about 50 Ano so bad

Haha whereas when I get lots of birds I kinda just keep them... although I did give away 2 last week I did have like over 30 birds at one point but my numbers have gone down a bit now... How many birds do you have Fraza?

Oh no wait... I just recounted and I still have over 30 anyway.... think my most was like 35...

Flight Feathers I have 35 at the moment not including chicks. But am also selling 5 of them this week so basically 30

And I did have about 50 at one point but my aviary was too small I had twelve more society’s 4 zebs two doves

Wow! Yeah I include my baby birds in the number. Not including babies I’d have just under 30 because I have about 5 or 6 baby Zebs!

Yeah considering I have 3 avaries I actually have don’t have that many birds. I actually have a limit of 20 flying birds not including quail and babies. But I think I’ve got like 19 flying birds so I’m just under! (Because one naughty little finch escaped) and then I have 7 quail and 5 or so baby birds.

Fraza don’t you keep birds inside tho? In my 1st aviary I have: 2 cockatiels, 2 pairs of zebra finches, 1 goldfinch, 2 canaries and 3 Chinese quail. In my breeding cage/spare cage I have 1 pair zebs. In my 2nd aviary (my biggest aviary!) I have 2 pair of budgies, 1 cockatiel, 2 Chinese quail. And then there’s my 3rd aviary which is my smallest aviary, which I can’t even really go in, and when I do the birds freak out because I take up most of the space. So in there I have 2 female Zebs, 1 pair of turquosines and 2 Chinese quail. And then I also have 4 spare cages.
