Gouldians, Society finches in the same cage?

Post by bonnies_gouldians » Sun Nov 30, 2008 12:09 am

I have two pairs of Gouldian finches, one of which is breeding (Rocky and Jezebel). Rocky, the cock, has become randomly aggressive towards my other pair. Devin used to sing and dance for Agnes but I have not seen him do this much at all sense Rocky came into the picture (he still eats, drinks, preens himself and Agnes, but just doesnt sing as much as he used to).

My question is, I have read on several pages that having 3 pairs of birds in a cage (of appropriate size) is better than having 2 pairs. BUT Rocky and Jezebel already have eggs in the nest and I dont want to interupt them too much. I have only had Rocky and Jezebel now for about three days (she has already laid two eggs in that time!) and Jezebel doesnt seem too easily bothered, she doesnt even freak out when I go to remove the food/water dishes, even if she is sitting right on the edge of one of them, she just hops to the nearest perch, she doesnt even fly away or spook.

I have one pair of society finches that I planned on using for fostering if needed, but I know how much they like to be in nests, so I dont know if I want to risk putting them in there, or if I should get another pair of gouldians, or if I should leave well enough alone and let the two pairs settle their differences (which is NOT being done in a violent manner, more of, every once in awhile, Rocky flies up to Devin or Agnes and pecks them, which is when they fly away and a chase does not normally occur).

Thoughts?
4 gouldians (Devin and Agnes, Jezebel and Rocky), 4 society finches, 2 Zebras, 2 Cordon Bleus

create an area in the cage so that the birds are out of sight of each other. depending on what size cage they are in you could achieve this by putting a plant or part of a plant in somewhere or the least attractive way would be to just hang a piece of paper where you think it would help the most
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.
