Can a male canary fertilize the eggs of a female zebra finch? I have these two types in the same cage and the zebra just laid 3 eggs last night and is sitting on them? Is there an actual chick forming in the egg or is it not possible? I just got the zebra about 2-3 weeks ago. Please give me some advice! Thanks, Kari

Hi Kary,

I have never heard of a Zebra and Canary cross-breeding and I doubt that they would.

A hen will lay eggs even without the prescence of a male and the eggs will not be fertile. I am assuming that you don't have a male zebra in the cage as well.

no zebra male in the cage! I did just buy the female 2 weeks ago. Could she be fertile for that long?

Females can store sperm for up to about 16 days in their reproductive tracts. So although unlikely, it is possible that the eggs are fertile assuming the female zebra was bred by a male zebra right before purchase.
