Saffron finches?
I just noticed saffron finches at the local pet store. I'm sure I've seen them before, but this time they just jumped out and yelled (chirped?) "Buy Me, Buy Me!" Before I take on another new bird, can anyone tell me anything about them? I've read they're a little aggressive, but I plan (if I buy them) to cage them separately so that shouldn't be much of a problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated...they sure were pretty....advice?

Yes, the Saffron's are tempting aren't they? Such pretty birds!
Have you checked out the species info Crystal has on the FINCH INFORMATION CENTER? The link is to the left, and then you click on 'species' in the menu on the left. Lots of good info there!
Let us know what you decide. ;)

I couldn't stand it any longer. After about 3 months, the beautiful Saffrons were still unsold at Petsmart. I went in last night and made the manager an offer (20% off their price). He took the offer, but only if I bought all the birds! I'm now the proud owner of 4 new birds. I had to do it. The only thing that surprises my husband is that it took me so long

Saffron finches
Hi ! This is my first post to this forum (or any, for that matter - it took me several weeks to figure this out...) anyway, I had to smile about the woman who kept going in and looking at the Saffron finches in the pet store...I first saw a pair in our local pet shop, about 6 months ago and wanted them ever since. Finally one day I whipped out my card and $200 later, brought them home with a smallish cage. Now, because the beautiful birds can't really fly in that cage, I plunked down $350 for a very large cage, hoping to house my 7 various little brown finches, 2 button quail, and pair of diamond doves in it as well. Then, I began reading about Saffrons and have heard that they might not all get along! I have probably spent another couple hundred (I have saved receipts but am afraid to add them up) on various accesories for the large cage that is on backorder, and every day I talk to the lovely birds telling them how much I spent just so they can soon fly, and telling my little brown finches that I love them too...
I think maybe you all can relate to this. Now the male Saffron doesn't fly away every time I approach the cage. He seems to listen while I talk to him! (He is thinking...SHOW me the cage...)Thank you for all of the wonderful information here. I have spent hours reading over the last few weeks!

Hey Rubysmom - I think it's against the rules to add up the receipts!! I hate to think how much I've spent on finches, cages, supplies, etc. Luckily, my husband is very understanding (and has an expensive hobby of his own) so he never complains. It's an addicting hobby - but very rewarding! I did almost have a heart attack this morning - I went out to feed the Saffrons, and this beautiful yellow bird was on the outside of the cage. I froze, but the bird flew away. When I looked in the cage, all 4 were still there. I guess they just had a pretty visitor. Sure wish I'd gotten a better look at it!
