They are gorgeous Bill. I prefer the selfs over the pied. I've seen tons of societies in the pet stores here, but don't think I've ever seen the chocolate self. Funny, cause you would think they'd be more common. I'd love to some day have a pair of fawn selfs if I could find such a thing, cause the fawn is really my favourite colour.

Thanks Franny..
I won these at a raffle last year at a show and I wasn't expecting to bring any 'kids' home with me. The owner placed well in the show with her other birds and I'm very pleased with them. She is listed in the NFSS journal with her winning birds. Think I have a good pair from her.
If you find out how to breed fawn Owls, I would really love to know.
I'm learning.. I don't know all the genetics or the descriptions of which bird falls in a specific category. Forgive my ignorance.. I will learn..

Hi Bill,
Very nice birds! I know they are more sought after by fanciers then the pieds. They are a lot less common then what you can find in the petstore. The store I got my societies had all pieds and only one European Society. He was pretty cool black/brown solid.

Very handsome boys there, Bill! That's a very unique way of getting birds. Congrats on winning the raffle!
Looks just like my one offspring boy I got out of 4 and the only one that was a Chocolate Self - the other three were Crested Pieds. Of course I had to keep him.

I wish my Societies would lay more eggs.

Liz

Good-looking birds, Bill. The woman you got them from is a very good breeder, gives her birds the best. For whatever reason, the pieds became so popular, for a while, you hardly ever saw the selfs. Some breeders are now concentrating on breeding selfs, so you will see them at shows and marts.

wow... i really like those societies.
How many different kinds of societies are there?
What does "self" mean!?
I think, of all the different pictures of societies i have ever seen, i think i like these so far the best. Although I love all finches. I just like the more solid color of these guys.
>_< awesome finches!
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

"Self" just means these birds have no white markings. There are many different types of Societies....Pieds, Dilutes, Albinos, Clearwings, etc.

Nice looking Birds!! I prefer the Self too and the Chocolate Self is my favorite but when I was offered a free pair of Crested Pieds who had fed other type birds I grabbed them. Beggars can't be choosers, right? Anyway, you have a great looking pair there.

Thanks Sally..
She said I won a great pair and I agree. I noticed in the NFSS journal that she was listed for her Saffrons at the show, so I know she is a very good breeder.

hehe.. Liz..
One of them is a girl (I won't tell her you said that)

.. The one with the red band, which you probably can't see from the pics (she's the one hanging upside down on the cuttlebone). She did lay one egg in a food cup, but I removed it. Probably best since she was born in 2008 and not even a year old yet.
