Which is the most calm or easy going finch species?

Post by EddieNorCal » Fri Feb 27, 2009 8:14 pm

Question for all the finch owners on this site... out of all the finch species you've owned, in general which do you find the most calm, relaxed, or easy going? In other words, which are the least flighty or easily spooked?

In my opinion it is the Lady Gouldian. They are not flighty like most of the rest of them and are much easier to catch if I have to catch them. They seem more relaxed and laid back than any other Finch I have owned. I have a handfed one right now that is very sweet and hangs out with me on my shoulder or my finger. Plus most of my adults will sit near me when I talk to them in their cages and not fly around freaking out when I walk into the room like some of the others do. I really like the Goulds!!

Societies get my vote as the calmest birds over here too.

Most of my gouldians were cage raised, so they are a bit spooky. I do have one that is tame and is incredibly friendly. He was raised in an aviary. I think most any finch can be calm once they feel comfortable. When societies are spooked, they seem to just be motionless.

If you're asking about a finch that isn't neurotic and doesn't fly from perch to perch all day long, then I'll say Gouldian.

Zebras and Shaft-tails are constantly on the move. Busy little buggers they are!

There might be other finches out there, I'm just speaking from personal experience of course.

A great question Eddie..

It all depends. You may find some more exotic birds that are very comfortable with a lot of distractions and then some of the more common ones that are 'flighty'. I think it all depends on how they are raised.

My Societies are very comfortable with a lot of distractions. They greet me with a lot of vocalization when I go into their room. It may be just because i'm putting water in their baths.. I don't know.

Depends on the birds disposition. Some are fine, some are feisty, through all the species. I have 2 Javas now and they are completely opposite. Riff is really noisy and aggressive and Raff is quiet and curious.

In my aviary it is the gouldians. They do not fly away and will let me get within inches of them.

In my aviaries the most relaxed bird is without doubt the Painted Finch. They are naturally tame and confiding. If they happen to be eating at the time I am dishing out the morning goodies, they just keep going about their business only inches away. They will readily take seeding grasses out of my hand.
