Lady Gouldian Finch Fledges - video

I was lucky to catch this one as it fledged earlier today. I was in the kitchen taking the video through the door to the birdroom then I opened the door and went in for a closer view. Hope you enjoy seeing this youngsters first experience outside of his nestbox.

There are two other chicks in the nestbox... still.

Aww, that's very sweet! He looked so scared to go and I don't think the lecture he was getting from his parents made him feel any better after he did it.

(PS: Love the Weather Network music is the background. Took me a sec to figure out where I'd heard it before ;) )

Thanks Mike. The WeatherChannel is on just about 24/7 with me in the kitchen - it's my background noise (I don't know why since I very much enjoy listening to my finches too).

Thank you all. It was fun watching yet never knowing when he would come out. Not quite the lovely flight across the cage I was expecting but rather a... plop to the floor. Oh well.

Of course now he is back IN the nestbox. Funny how some go back in and others never go back.

Great video, Liz! After the first few seconds of looking around with a 'how did I get here?' look, he quickly gained confidence and is so alert--looking good. Many of my waxbills sit on the floor with a stunned look for quite some time, like they are afraid to even move.

Cool video. Gouldians look so confident when they appear. The shaft-tail babies I have came out several days ago and they still can't fly well. They sometimes huddle in the corner, but then later return to the nestbox.
Videos like these remind me why I'm partial to Gouldians than other species. Thanks for sharing.

Great video.
I saw only 2 of my 4 zebras fledge, and I'm not sure that it was 2 different ones or the same one again after going back in. Their "hesitating" antics of looking like they are going to fledge then turning around and going back into the nest makes it funny, yet anxious cuz I want to see them fledge.

What an awesome video! I sure hope that someday when mine decide to make me a "mommy" I have the opportunity to do that. Just one ? though. Are those babies already starting to color up? Or is that the lighting?

Thanks for all the comments! I haven't seen the other two come out yet - though they may have already gone back inside before I get home from work. Again today, I only saw one out and he went back in this evening.

The chicks are definitely not colouring up yet but I'll be very interested to see what the parents (C=RH/PB-W/SFY+BB + H=BH/PB-W/BB) have created

Absolutely Liz. That's half the fun. Finding out the what colors you'll get. When I bred dogs, the excitement for me was: what colors, how many, and what are the sexes!
