Mixed aviary breeding

What are the chances of diffferent species breeding in a room-sized aviary if there are other species present?

Some of you may know that I plan on having a large, all-glass bird room in my next house. I am going to be putting tons of plants and things in there and I am going to try my hardest to provide the nesting requirements for each species and I will supply live food very frequently. Basically, every bird will have the things it needs to build a nest and raise their chicks, it will just be up to them if they will do it or not. My question basically is, what are the chances of them breeding and raising with other species present? Ofcourse they will have tons of privacy with all the plants; the room will be as close to nature as I can get it. My goal is not to have them breed, just to provide a place secure enough that they feel they can if they want to.

Do you guys have any tips on successfully breeding in a mixed aviary? And do you think with the right environment the birds would be happy to?

Hi Domenic,

I have a sunroom that is turned into an aviary. IT has glass windows al lthe way around it and is loaded with plants and trees.

I also have a mixed species aviary. I have one pair of each of the species I keep except for the gouldians and I have 4 pairs of them.

All my birds court, nest and breed very well. The only problem I have is getting the gouldians to stop breeding as I do not seperate them. I am now adding on to my aviary and I will divide it up so I can seperate them when needed.

I would advise you to save a little section where you can do this.
It has taken me a while to figure this one out.

Also... if you have room for a fountain they absolute love that! They love the sound of water and they love being able to bath when THEY want to.
You just have to really be careful to keep it very clean every day so it is alot of work, but well worth it.

Good luck!

I have never mixed species bred but will in the future. I plan to mix goldbreast waxbills and gouldians.
The one thing to be careful of is not putting species in that will readily crossbreed. Many species will, so just research before hand.
Will love to see your beautiful aviary in the future.

I have always kept community aviaries and have never had a bird cross breed. Even keeping birds that may do so. It may happen though if I did not always keep pairs. If I lose a bird I replace its mate with a new mate almost immediately.
