My Zebra Finches

Its been 2 months since I bought my Zebra Finches,4 in number. The 4 of them are a normal cock,a pied cock,a yellow beak white cock and a fawn hen.The last 2 have paired up and the white cock was constantly fighting with the other 2 cocks whenever they tried to get near the hen.The hen even laid an egg in the food bowl and abandoned it.I then separated the other 2 cocks and kept them in a separate cage.Planning to buy 2 hens as well as one more pair and form a breeding colony.I'm even planning to buy a pair of Stars as well since these are rare species in the Indian Market. My previous experience with finches was with Black Headed Munias,Red Avadavats and Zebras kept in an indoor cage as a mixed collection.

Welcome back to the wonderful world of finches. Sounds like you are in the same boat as the rest of us, once you've been bitten by the finch bug, there's no turning back. You were smart to separate the two males from the couple. Three boys fighting over one girl could have become a mess very quickly.
You'll have to keep us up to date on your ever growing flock.

I can easily sympathize with your situation. It is for this reason that I decided to keep things simple with 2 males. Nothing can be simpler than that. No eggs, No jealousy, No babies, No competition, just 2 little birdies that by virtue of the circumstances, are forced to act according to nature and simply bond to each other. It's fool proof.
That said however, a week ago I decided to get adventurous and take in a third finch. Of course I did not get too adventurous because he too is a male. So now I have three males. So far, no problems. He is a rather young, active and perky little guy.
In short, I went through the mating routine with the previous female. Once was enough. Too noisy among other things. I have plenty of noise coming from my Quaker parrot who just talks and talke all the time. Anyway, good luck with your new flock.

I couldn't find the 2 females I was looking for today.Hence,I bought a pair of Societies instead. Also saw some Gouldians,Javas and Heck's there.Planning to buy a pair of Gouldians along with the 2 Zebra females I need.
The Society pair has been housed with my Zebras in a bigger flight. The Zebras seemed a bit intimidated by the size of the Societies at first but have settled down well with them.

Rag
Keep an eye on the zebras in your mixed cage.
I have seen where their behavior changes over time. Where they appeared to be friends, one now chases the other hissing at him. Very strange, as they sleep together at night on the perch, but don't seem to like each other during the day.

I've introduced baskets in my flight and the finches seem interested and roost there.

I am going to wish you the best of luck for babies, even though with zebras you shouldn't need it
