Fantastic Fosters

Post by CandoAviary » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:14 pm

My trio of male societies and one crested female have been worth thier weight in gold. They had raised 3 gouldians for me earlier and 3 of thier own...all are crested. The 3 younger societies are learning fostering skills. And they have proven to be CLEAN. :D So now I have 3 nest in thier flight. They have one nest with 5 gouldians that were tossed (the red head pair I bought from the military couple) and 3 of thier own....It is getting crowded.

A nest with 2 OH gouldian chicks (parents are in moulting so I pulled the eggs and nest.

And a nest with extra eggs, some gouldians from nest that I pulled and 2 are parrots...possibly fertile.

Congrats on having some good fosters--not all Societies are automatically. And yes, they can be worth their weight in gold--sure beats handfeeding, doesn't it?!

Well... I am still handfeeding 4. They were at an age that just wasn't conducive to giving the societies at that time. I lucked out with the 5 red head gouldians being tossed due to the fact that they were sitting on 3 of thier own eggs :D Seems once they get into that feeding mode they just go, go, go so it is easy to sneek another nest...or 2 in :D Nice that way too because I can keep the clutches seperate. But I still will hand feed if they won't. I have supplimenting these guy with kaytee. At first 2 x a day. then just 1 time. Now none. There were just sooo many.

Wow you are giving them a workout.
Hope they pull it all off for you.
You must be pretty busy supplying them with food to eat, for them to feed all the chicks.

Yes, they are earning thier keep and I am getting more sleep instead of handfeeding :D
There are 7 societies feeding these 10 chicks. They keep them packed. Consuming a whole boiled egg per day  Plus millet spray, finch seed mix and commercial dry eggfood. The societies look in great shape also :D
