Red headed finch Update Feb 7th
I have an chance at getting a piar of young Red headed finches tomorrow. (they are also called the Paradise Finch or Red Headed Weaver)
They are a bigger finch about the size of a Java. The person wants $125.00 per pair. Is this a good price? Does anyone have any experience with these. They are beautiful.

Cindy,
I have never see those before. Have you read about them to see if they need any special foods or special housing?
They are very pretty.

Reminds me of the Cherry or Plumhead finch but with so much more colour on his head. Yep, as Donna said, some research will go a long way. I don't have any experience with them though.

Donna and Liz, they are closely related to the Cut Throat and housed about the same.

Do you think I should get a pair?

I too have never kept these. My finch book has this to say of them. The most important stuff anyhow.
Latin name: Amadina erythrocephala (Related to cut-throat Amadina fasciata)
Distribution: Angola south as far as South Africa and central Africa
Quiet, purring, twittering song.
Partial cavity nester
Robust and undemanding. 12-14 hr day with aid of lighting.
Nest in half-cavity or half open nesting box (rarely builds its own nests and moves into nests of other species).
Resents nest checks
4-6 eggs, incubation 14-15 days
Frequently nests successfully.
Social behaviour: Keep mating pairs by themselves during mating season. They will take over other inhabitants nests. At other times they may be kept with other Estrildidae.

Sounds like the last paragraph could be the most important. So it depends on how you will keep them, in an aviary or by themselves. Go for it!!

I spoke to my breeder, she always takes the pairs out of the aviary and puts them in individual cages so that there is no aggression towards others. She said they should be fine in a 30 x 18 cage.
I am also going to look for another larger flight like my shaftails have but maybe deeper.

Thanks Monotwine. There is not a lot written up on them but I was told they are kept like Cut Throat. I like the all over red head and the look of the chest feathers.
My mother had Cut Throat, she housed pairs separately.

Re: Red headed finch, Paradise Finch or Red Headed Weaver
I wrote someone that used to breed them and they said they are hardly seen in the states anymore.
The Pekin Robins will probably no longer be allowed in the states for sometime, they can't even be brought in by way of Canada...so is this little Red headed finch my new Pekin Robin?

And I'm so excited for you! If I can't get new birds right now... the next best thing is celebrating someone else getting new birds!!!
