These are my new birds!! They are calm and mellow so far! There's not all that much info on them....does anyone have any breeding experience? My zebra's don't mess with them a bit! They are a bit aloof, but lovely. queenb

Nice bird’s queenb. I have heard of them but have never kept them. I would be interested in hearing your experience with them. They are a South American species aren’t they?

I've never heard of them either. They look sort of stern with that white stripe right over their eye.

Thanks for your interest...I was at one of my local bird shops (Torrance, CA) that I just love to drop in on. The Vietnamese shop owner is REALLY into birds...he has had them since he was a child. Anyway, I like going there because he has a quirky, very healthy selection of finches. Since I was over-anxious in starting out and had some unfortunate experiences, I didn't want to spend as much as I had for my pair of departed owls, but wanted something different. So, the collared warblings found a home.

You are right, they are from South America and live near the equator. I kept them inside to acclimate (they hated the small space), and waited for our weather to warm. The shop-owner told me that after 6 or so months outside, they will be ready for winter....I wish the man that sold me the owls had been as helpful.
Anyway, I think they are wild looking, very intense. They have a HUGE hop..long legs that easily lift them 15". I think they are grass birds and like to perch on the cage sides or a diagonal branch. They are a little quiet for me, and they don't snuggle with each other (like my owls), although the male and female find each other and watch the crazy zebras with a slight look of disdain. They did have some mating dance action going on in Feb., but there wasn't a nest or nesting material in the quarantine cage, so I have no idea what kind of parents they are. The shop owner did tell me that they mate when it's convenient, opportunity trumps any type of relationship. In fact, while the Zebras sleep warmly in their breeding box/nest, the Hungarians (our nickname, a.k.a. Victor and Victoria) sit separate in front of the ceramic lamp. Oh, and they are picky eaters!
