Okay,
here goes. I have three societies one of which is laying and sitting on eggs constantly. She wants so much to be a mom but she is one of three females so the eggs are never fertile. then there is my pair of canarys. The female laid an egg over the weekend. I saw her and the male mating but she is a terrible mom always tossing her eggs so I gave the egg to the society. Is this a bad idea? I know they are different sizes but what does everyone think? if it is bad I will remove the egg.

I would certainly give it a try and see if they can take care of it full-term. Good luck and PLEASE keep us posted.

Im sure if the societies are broody they will incubate and hatch the egg out if it is fertile.

The only problem I can think of is when it comes time to feed the chicks.
Canaries gape in a different manner to finch chicks. They have a bright pink/red mouth and they stick their heads high in the air to be fed.
The societies might be confused by this method and may not feed.

Its worth giving it a try if the canaries aren't good parents, better than finding the egg broken on the floor if the chuck it.

I hope all goes well and the little canary egg hatches and they feed it out. Fingers crossed, keep us updated.

Thanks for all the input. I just have a feeling that it will hatch and all will be good. That little society is so into her nesting and since I really believe this could be a fertile egg I said to myself maybe I will get a nice Christmas present as I love all my birds so much. My pair of goulds that I got from the Baltimore show had one little baby on December 2 so I am excited about that. The dad is a redhead blue and the mom is a redhead split to blue so I am excited. Trying not to bother them as this is their first clutch and out of three eggs only the one hatched. Is this usual for the first time?

never heard that the socities will feed an open nest breeder as a canary is but i am very curious how this went / goes . So keep us updated please

I've studied this and everything Robin has said is correct. But since your society is so intent on raising chicks I think she will overlook the canary's differences. Keep us posted on this, we all love pics here too.

i KNOW THE BABY CANARIES BEG IN A DIFFERENT WAY WITH THEIR LITTLE HEADS UP, BUT I AM STILL HOPEFUL BECAUSE NATURE IS A STRANGE THING SOMETIMES AND THIS LITTLE SOCIETY HAS BEEN SITTING ON INFERTILE EGGS FOR SO LONG I THINK SHE WILL BE HAPPY TO BE A MOMMA. I EXPECT THE HATCH DATE TO BE AROUND DECEMBER 19 OR SO , SO I AM GOING TO CANDLE THE EGG THIS WEEKEND TO SEE IF IT IS INDEED FERTILE. I WILL KEEP YOU ALL INFORMED. THANKS FOR ALL THE RESPONSES.

I looked today and the canary egg is gone. I guess it wasn't meant to be. Just wanted to update you all on the story. Maybe next time.

I know what you feel like.

I had a gouldian egg "disappear" from my zebra nest. Only thing I could think of is they "ate" the intruder egg. I did not have my nestcam recording, so I don't know what really happened.

I've had eggs disappear as well. I have always assumed the parents accidentally punctured the egg and would continue to eat it. I would give it another shot one day, maybe it was an accident.

Sorry to hear this endeavor didn't work out.
