Gouldian indicators?
when looking at gouldians what type of indicators/signs do you look for if it suspected that a bird may be split for a colour other than what it is showing. for example I have heard that a bird that is split for blue may show some blue around the vent

Re: Gouldian indicators?
I have been told buy much more experienced gouldian breeders than me that you can not tell until you mate them and they throw blues. BUT...
having said that, I have 2 RH PB GB birds that I thought was normals, Same with 2 females. Both pairs have thrown blues. Studying them they do appear to have more blue around their necks, bluer on the tail feathers and vent area, also even a bluish sheen to the wing feathers. This is comparing them in the same light as males that are truly normals. So I don't know if what I am seeing is any indicator or if it just happens to be that normals particular shade of green... since some do tend towards the seagreen colors sometimes. It is something that I am paying attention to as I go forward into breeding blues and buying new split stock to breed with.

In yellow goulds, you can tell if a male is SF or DF yellow by the presence or absence of the blue fluorescent ring around its neck. If it has the blue ring, its SFY, if it doesn't, its a DFY bird. I have zero experience with silvers, blues, etc.

I've never been able to see any visual different in the feathers of a normal or a split to blue Gouldian.

I feel like it's one of those things where if you want to see something, you will find something to see.
I believe what may be seen is total coincidence and will vary from bird to bird.
If I show you two birds side by side without knowing the genetics my guess is nobody would be able to tell just by looking.
It would be a "wild guess."
I have birds that are NOT split for blue that look no different (to me) than ones I know for sure are.
