What the hey? Hybrid
I was at my local pet store and saw yet another odd looking finch. I know my finch species and I'm pretty sure this does not occur in nature. They had it listed as a society finch but clearly it is not. (atleast not fully) I did not buy it, but was curious, what do you guys think about it? It was about the size of an orange weaver.

Re: What the hey? Hybrid
Looks like a black headed nun or possible a tri colored nun to me.

Re: What the hey? Hybrid
Maybe a nun-society hybrid then? I do think there are similarities to the nun.

I think it is some kind of mannikin. It is VERY similar to my chestnut breasted mannikin.

It did not look like a juvenile. It already had really long toenails and I don't think it was in a molt...

Re: What the hey? Hybrid
Researching the bird in Munias and Mannikins by Robin Restall leads me to believe the bird is a young tri-colored nun. The bird is molting into it's adult color.
Munias take a long time to molt into their adult colors. In captivity a munias nails grow long real fast and need to be trimmed constantly. Even with proper and different size branches. So it is possible for a young bird to have long nails.

Re: What the hey? Hybrid
Very true - I had a pair of black headed nuns a few years ago. Very long nails, all the time. Was constantly trimming them. I got mine as adults, so no idea what a juvenile would look like though. Very pretty, what ever it is.JohnBoy wrote:... In captivity a munias nails grow long real fast and need to be trimmed constantly. Even with proper and different size branches.
