Skinny legged parrot finches

Post by CandoAviary » Sat Jan 23, 2010 12:59 pm

These are the first closed band red throat parrot finches I have done. They take a size "C" one size smaller than the gouldians.Skinny Legs  I have size "A" for the goldbreast...they are awful small  That should be a real trick to get those on :? I put the chicks in the duck basket as I band so they don't fall on the floor. I then return the chicks to the nest :D

Great pictures!
Now do they need lot's of live food supplied to them while feeding babies? I have a pair coming soon and I hope I am able to be as successful as you. Good Job!

These are not fed live foods. My first pair I did feed mealworms to, dried insect food and eggfood with boiled egg. They ate mostly the eggfood so I gradually reduced the mealworms and now I never feed them mealworms. I have had several successful clutches on dried insects like Orlux insect patee and Vetafarm insect patee. But mostly boiled eggs :D What color are you getting? Would love to hear more about them.

Skinny legged parrot finches

Post by jimlas43 » Sat Jan 23, 2010 5:40 pm

Hi There,
I'm getting the ones with the bright Red heads and Bright green bodies. I love the males trilling song :o)
I use egg food all of the time as well. I mix boiled eggs with Abba Green 95, I think it is. All of my birds gobble it right up :o)
I have just started buying meal worms because I have Blue Caps
but it would be so neat to feed just the egg food. I have read some of the ingredients on some of this insect food and while alot of them do have insects in there, some have fish or meat products. it's weird.
I get an item from over this way called, Bag O Bugs, and it has a lot of good insects in it.
Thanks so much for sharing :o)
Wendy

I didn't need any lubrication at all this time.... no spit or nothing
I think the "A" size will be a little tricky with those goldbreast and these aging eyes

Here is a picture I took today of them. Not the best picture, but they are so busy it is hard to get one. They still have alot of green color, but the blue is beginning to finally come through.

Candace, I can't closed band at all with just my glasses. I got one of those magnifying glasses that hang around your neck, usually used to do needlework or other closeup work. That lets me make sure I am putting the band on right-side-up, and more importantly, I can check and make sure three toes are showing thru on the other side before I work the band over the ankle and back toe.

Congrats on the babies!
