Illusive Firefinch

Post by monotwine » Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:49 pm

I have two pairs of Red-billed firefinch in my aviary and hardly ever see them. They are small and always skulking around under bushes or flightsy as ever. Never a clean clear shot.
So I was lying in my aviary trying to be as inconspicous as possible *to get pics of young button chicks* and happened to get a pic of my one male who is watching over his hen currently sitting on 2 eggs. Thought I would share my success. I find firefinches even more difficult to capture on camera than the parrot finches!

Illusive Firefinch

Post by jimlas43 » Sun Jan 24, 2010 3:56 pm

I had a chance to buy a pair of senegal fire finches for 140.00. Is that a good deal. The picture that you posted is so beautiful. I opted to go with three Red headed parrot finches for now though. A pair and a single male for 300.00.
It is so hard to decide on these little guys :o)
It's like having a reef hobby. The fish do the same thing to you :o)

My red billed fires are not shy at all. They are always in view and aren't even afraid of me when I am in the aviary. I did have them in a 24"x24"x48" cage for about 6 months before I put them in the aviary. So maybe this is why they are not scared of me.

Anyway, what a gorgeous picture! As a matter of fact, it's one of the prettiest I have ever seen of a red billed fire.

He is so pretty. What a good job he is doing watching over his hen and eggs.
I would like a picture of you on your belly trying to look inconspicuous  That Male fire is keeping an eye on you

Great picture... ! My RB Firefinches have just hatched chicks.. I don't know how many and I don't want to disturb them. I love these little gems almost as much as the Strawberries. Wonderful shot, Monotwine! :) =D>

 Gorgeous! Where have you been hiding these birds? I would love to have some senegals in a mixed aviary, they are incredibly beautiful if you get the right one (by that I mean I have seen some pretty scruffy looking ones that I had to pass on).

Sometimes those scruffy ones can turn into beauties with the right food and a little TLC.
