I have a lone male and was looking intoo the breed before going to show and looking to buy hen. I noticed there are 2 color patterns shown for this breed., one is almost all black and white the other is black with brown trim and white. Both are shown with same common as well as latin names. Is the color differences just mutations?
My question then is would there be a difference to look for in the hen also?

Re: Pin- tail Whyday color differences
The hen is colored more like a sparrow and the male has all the color when in breeding plumage. When not in breeding plumage he looks just like the female.
The shaft tail whydah is similar but it is a different bird. Where the pintail is white the shaft tail is buff.
