white head nun

Post by ac12 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:52 am

I was at a birdmart today and we saw a very nice bird that I was VERY tempted to get. A pair of white headed nuns. They looked like a mini bald eagle, or as my wife said hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. The breeder wanted $125 for the pair.

BUT 2 problems
#1 - I am already beyond capacity of my quarantine cages and where to put the quarantine birds, I had to pass them up. I have a canary in one bathroom (to keep him from learning the zebras NOISE), a gouldian in another bathroom (1 week into quarantine) and the 4 zebras I got today (3 penguins + 1 blackcheek) are in the hall by the front door for lack of any place else to put them.

#2 - I only have the 8 breeder cages, with a prohibition on adding more. And they are occupied or spoken for. So I don't even have the permanent space for it :(

Congrats on you new birds... I love penquins and a new gould? what color.
I like the nuns. They are probably my favorite of the manakin/munia family. But you are wise to not over crowd yourself. Always leave room for the young to grow out :D

Candace
It is a RH-WB-YB hen.

I got it to replace my RH-PB-YB hen that has been CHASING her mate after laying the eggs. Although it appears that she is getting better this go around. We shall see how she does with this clutch of eggs.

Grow out.... :(
When the penguins come out of quarantine I will have to cull back the gray zebras. The hard part is to decide which ones to take to the bird store.

You are right about the prices. I WISH I could get a pair for $2. But without the available birds that you have, we are stuck with the importers and distributors before we get to the dealers. Or the few breeders know they can get the price, because of the scarcity of the bird. "Supply and demand" determines what they will sell for.

It's the same here with the Euro Goldfinches... wild caught. Nonetheless, many of them die in captivity. Compare that to a captive-bred euro goldfinch that costs at least 150 euros.
I wish I could find White Headed Nuns here, they are on my wish list as #2 (after the sea green RTPF)
