Hi all for such a gorgeous looking bird does anybody know why the European serin is not well known or a popular caged bird?Found out that they are very expensive and it's probably the biggest reason it's not readily available.Perhaps they are difficult to breed and or don't adhere to captivity.Would love to own one but at 2000 dollars AUS out of my reach.

that is actually cheap when compared to the prices of a few other species in Australia.
I've heard of green strawberries being sold for $5000 a pair.

Thanks for that link, Mick. It is always interesting to see what birds are kept in other parts of the world, and how much they sell for. I was surprised to see that Yellow Stars are cheaper than Red Stars, and especially surprised at the price of Gray Singers--you can hardly give them away here (I think just because people don't have any idea what a delightful singer they are).
