Cordon Blue Subspecies ID....Question

Post by Chris103 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:25 pm

I need some help from all of you that own Cordons! I recentley got a pair of Blue Caps and I noticed that the pair has a small (dime size) area of almost white feathers just near the vent. And when I looked at my Red Cheeks, they had no white near the vent....just a continuation of the brown. I looked at photos on the net of other Cordons and noticed the same whitish patch on the blue caps. I am wondering if this could be a way to Identify subspecies other than beak color, body shape...etc. I only have 4 Cordons so its obviously not a good sample size to see if there is a difference in the general CB population. Sooooo I was hoping that you CB owners could take a peek and let me know what you all see. I know several of you have both subspecies so it would be really helpful to hear from you!

I would take pics to show you what Im talking about but my Blue Caps are already nest building and mating!!!! I've only had them a week!

Just taking a quick look at mine, of course they all starting flying around so made it harder, but I can see white patch on the CBs, actually quite large on some of them, but haven't seen it on the RCs. I have to move a bunch of them tomorrow, so I'll try to get a better look then.
