Red Eared Waxbills

Hi everyone! I thought I'd post some pics of my pair of red-ears. They are some of my favorite birds!

Beautiful! We have one in our mixed male melange...he's not quite as vividly red as yours though...more pink...and definately a male!

I love waxbills! They're so quick, though - how did you get that little guy back into his cage?!

Yes, they are my fastest finches actually! I just follow them until I can grab them quickly from behind. It gives them exercise!

Adult red-eared (black-rumped) waxbills have cherry red beaks (juvenile red-eye striped waxbills have dark beaks). They also lack the crimson 'lacing' in their wings.
Since your birds are adults and sporting the crimson wing feathers, I suspect you have two rosey rumped waxbills (also called Sundevall's waxbill, Estrilda rhodopyga) which are the only ones of the three red-eye striped waxbill species to have black beaks.

Wow, they were sold to me as red-ears... I had no idea. That's ok though, I love these birds! They are so sweet, and get along with everyone!

...that explains it! Went running to look at 'Pinky'...and he's definatley a black-rump...cherry-red beak and all!

I wondered - they look just like my rosey rumps! There are so many "red" something waxbills, though, I can't keep them straight....
