Crimson Seedcrackers are on my want list. I am thinking of purchasing a pair next week. There is not much info except that they are aggressive toward smaller birds and therefore should be kept with budgies and similar sized birds. I would set up their own cage.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with these? I want to know if they are hardy, do well in captivity, breed in captivity, etc?
I saw a pair at the New Orleans bird fair and can't stop thinking about them. I have to have them if there is no problem in keeping them.

Never kept them but can see why you would want to...they are beautiful.
I know they are from the rainforrest so they should do well in the humid enviroment we live in. Also the diet you feed of seed and insects when breeding should do them just fine. Post Pics when you get them

I have several pairs at this time, I have kept them in seperate cages so far but I am going to try a pair in a large planted flight with some waxbills in the very near future.... I have been searching everywhere for information on these guys, however I have found very little so far. Mine have yet to eat anything except seed & I have tried a lot of other foods? They seem to prefer the white millet and canary seed more then any of the other seeds I have tried to give them. They seem hardy & are eating well, kinda remind me of a Diamond Sparrow as far as thier attitude.. Anyway, they are beutifull & I am hooked on them & will figure them out over time..

Thanks Jan. Seeing the ones you had at the bird fair had me drooling. So you think they are pretty hardy so far as you can tell?

so far, so good.... They are dealing with our gulf coast heat / humidity, eating good and are really starting to settle down in our aviary compaired to when we got them.. Even the pair we hauled to LaPlace, and were drooled on for two days are doing great

I love this forum

You have confirmed some of my thoughts on setting these birds up, gave me some additional ideas & most of all, told me someone out there has raised them, so now I know I can
