Re: Society Finch Socialization Question
Hello everyone, I'm very new to gouldians . My first pair had there babies after a six months of trying . So now we have two babies flitting around the cage with there parents. I wanted to know is there a way to guess there sex before they get there colors showing?
Blessings of Love and Compassion to all,

Congrats on the fledges. I don't think you can sex them until they finish their adult molt, unless you hear a singer. They're very cute!

They're so cute! You probably not sex them until they are through their adult molt.

Thanks delray. I just ordered a yellow crowned bishop weaver (male) off finchfarm.com! i hope he makes it here ok and I hope he will get along with fluff. Ill send pictures when he arrives!delray wrote: well first, of all, welcome to the forum!! This place is great,
So I have society finches, so I can answer these questions. First of All, the reason you are having a hard time catching him is because finches are not the kind of birds that like human interaction, unless you tame them. I am actually going through the process now, with a step by step strategy. If you tame him properly, he will land on you no problem when it's time to go back.
Another thing is, you might want to get him a friend. He will be much happier this way, even more happy than he is now. I would recomend a male society finch, if you don't plan on breeding.
Parakeets are birds who like human interaction, finches are much different.
Also, the way you can tell he is a male is something called the puffy dance. They extend their neck upwards, and they move their necks around and make a special chirp.
I hope these questions help you. Enjoy Atticus

Tier 3 - Aggressive
These birds need a very spacious enclosure with plenty of visual barriers in order to be housed together. Keep a close eye on them and separate birds that quarrel. *Note that the Java Finch is a peaceful bird that may be housed with birds from Tier 2 and possibly Tier 1, but is placed in Tier 3 because of its intimidating size and ability to coexist with the other birds in Tier 3.
Cutthroat Finch (do not mix with waxbills)
Diamond Firetail Finch (do not mix with other Australian finches)
Gray Singing Finch ‡
Java Sparrow/Finch (see *Note above)
Melba Finch ‡ (do not mix with other Pytilias, or finches with red masks [e.g. Star Finches])
Saffron Finch
Weavers
This is part ofthe compatibility chart on the finch information center in the top left corner of the website. It says that weavers are aggressive, so just be careful and keep out. Hope he won't bully the society, but there is a possibility. Keep us posted.

Re: Society Finch Socialization Question
A weaver finch is a pretty poor choice for a friend for a society... why not...
..just get another society? Or at least something related like a spice finch or even a zebra. Weavers are nothing at all like societies behaviorally.

Re: Society Finch Socialization Question
delray I finally got my female bishop weaver. Tela is getting along great with fluff. No fighting or anything. She seems to like to jump around a lot more than fluff. But she's finally starting to settle down a little.
