'Nother Newbie Question re: Nesting

Post by lnlovesorange » Wed Jan 14, 2015 11:40 am

Another "Newbie" question. My male ZF Got a little crazy in building the nest. The "filler" is almost all the way to the top. The pair of them fit, but the stuff goes past the opening, and I'm afraid if she does lay eggs they will roll out, or I wont' be able to see them. Any suggestions? Should I take out some stuff? I'm so afraid to mess with anything, i just figure they been doing this for millions of years, they MUST know what they are doing right? But i've read so many "negative" things, i want to make sure there isn't anything I can do to avoid an egg roll situation #-o [-o<
Thanks again, so glad to be a part of this board!! (i'm SOOO going to be one of you guys, i'm only on my first pair, but I'm looking forward to a clutch, and forward to having more birds differenct species in the future!!!)

Zebras often get carried away building nests, and will continue to fill the nest almost to the top. I would remove some of the nesting material, and then take all other nesting material out of the cage, so he doesn't have anything else to work with. You may see him adding pieces of green veggies or spray millet into the cage, that urge to fill it up is pretty strong!

Welcome to the forum! We're glad you found us. There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on breeding and the Zebra finch. As far as wanting more finches, join the crowd! Often one pair leads to a roomful!
