Is this Okay?

Post by Societies&Zebras » Mon Feb 23, 2015 7:39 pm

I have been taking the babies out trying to get them to be socialized with me, and possible hand tamed. They are 16 days as of today and are looking very lovely. :) Anyways, is it okay that I have been taking them out to hand tame them and step up? Will the parents abandon at this age? Also I noticed I put the babies in the cage with the mom and dad to see how they would react and the dad was normal trying the show them to fly. Both babies can fly a short distance already. It was so cute hearing them beep to their mom and dad. It seemed like a cute family BUT. I've noticed the female gets somewhat aggressive towards them. Like for instance I put the babies in the cage once to see how mom and dad would like them and the mom flew down and pecked one of the babies not too hard and it fell to the cage floor. When Piper the dad saw this he pecked the mom back like he was protecting his kin. Is this going to be a problem when they actually fledge or did I just do wrong in the first place to see how mom and dad would react towards the babies?

Societies&Zebras if I were you, I would try and stay out of it. It's the best that you leave them alone for a bit, and don't test tye parents. Your lucky something worse didn't happen.

Okay delray I didn't really know it was a bad thing. But as of now they are feeding the babies and acting normal.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, just a little risky being that they are first timers.

Parents will abandoned them and stop feeding them if you disturb them too much. I would also suggest you to leave them alone until they are fully weaned and eating on their own. :)
I love Gouldian Finches.

Societies&Zebras I recommend talking to fetching. She is amazing at taming information. Also check out her website, www.fetchingfinches.com. It is a very...touchy situation for some, some people feel as though finches aren't meant to be tamed, ie, if you wanted a bird you could hold, you should of bought a budgie, cockatiel...etc. So just be careful obviously, and deffinately contact her she is AMAZING, and a scientist that actually looks at her birds as pets, and babies, and loves them, not just as "experiments" or lab trials...I've spoken to her on a few occassions, and is more than willing to help out as much as she can!!! (btw, fetching, I assumed you are female b/c of your compassion, but I'm sorry if you are a man!!!)
Good luck!!!
