lnlovesorange - It depends on the bird.

But they generally squirm for a few seconds then become resigned to the fact that you've got 'em.
It's terrible because you can often feel their little hearts racing. :(

Be prepared for nipping. Some will nip. It doesn't really hurt per se, but it's not comfortable, as those beaks can be sharp!
Quick funny story: My weaver, when I got her at the store, had really long nails, so we went around, gathered the supplies to clip her nails and then clipped them in the store before we boxed her. Well, the entire time, she had her jaw clamped on the sales girl's finger, often doing a gnawing motion! She was one pissed off little bird, that's for sure!

But indeed, they usually squirm until it becomes clear you've got them. Then they act more like a cat who's scruffed.

When i need to catch a bird, i prefer in the cage. I find if you slowly move your hand closer they don't panic as muchand when i get close (less than afoot) i use a quick motion to grab them. Also, keep your fingers splayed and slightly curved. I aim for the neck are because it's easier to rest your fingers there rather than holding their chest...which restricts breathing. I don't think I explained that very well, but i hold their heads between my forefinger and middle finger and cup the rest of their body loosely like the restraint on a roller coaster. Some struggle, some stay still and some use the sneaky maneuver of staying still until you let your guard down and then twist and try to fly away :)

Zebra finches are easy to sex most of the time. Try Canaries. #-o I gave up and start sending their feathers away for DNA testing.
