Good/Bad nesting materials

Post by Kelly » Fri Sep 04, 2015 9:38 pm

So I've been giving coconut fiber, dried grass and orchard grass for the birds to make their nests. My friend suggested maybe they don't like it and that's why they aren't laying and suggested unrolling cotton balls for them..Is that safe to use?

Honestly, I wouldn't use cotton balls. Birds tend to get their nails caught in that stuff, and it can cause all sorts of problems, from birds hanging themself by their feet, to baby birds being dragged out of nests when the parents try to free themselves.

I offer strips of ripped up kleenex (very popular) and absorbant as well.

Thank you! I was worried about trying that..I will try the kleenex though and I may try new nesting boxes..All I have right now is the bamboo nesting cup.

Usually, both Societies and Zebras, will nest in anything, even seed cups.

Mine have even nested, laid, hatched and raised babies successfully In a small wicker bathroom shelf, lol.

My local bird store offers sheets of burlap sack. I seperate the strands and give it to my gouldian pairs and they accept without any problems.

Paper strips from my document shredder does fine for my finches. At least for Gouldians and Bengalese [societies]. A byproduct of preventing identity theft.

For grasskeets I use the small size aspen chips sold as pet bedding although the shredded paper can also work.

Once they get into a breeding mood they aren't as fussy as we think they would be.

I've also avoided fabric and fibers because they can get tangled up in it.

Thank you all :!:

I'm going to stick with the coconut fiber, dried grass and orchard grass plus add some kleenex and paper strips and the burlap.
