What to put on severely plucked (raw) head??

Post by AzillaFinch » Mon Sep 07, 2015 2:01 pm

Hi all!

Have a question. Awaiting some meds in the mail. In the mean time, have a guy whose back of head has been pretty severely plucked by a cage mate. Was ok till today, but today had to pull him out of cage because today it is totally raw, severely red and almost bleeding. I know it has to hurt. Was wondering if there is anything that I can put on it that I may have in the house to soothe it until his meds arrive.

I know we're supposed to stay away from petrolium based products. I was thinking that because he is in a hospital cage, alone, with no other birds AND because it is on the back of his head where he can't possibly reach it with his beak to preen, could I put something like neosporin (creme kind... not the petrolium base gel kind) on it???

Any of your thoughts or tips to help me keep him comfortable till his meds arrive would be greatly appreciated!!

I think Neosporin would be fine, that is what I use to grease the feet when I am putting on closed bands, and they certainly can reach their feet/toes with their beak.

Sally

Thanks so much!! Just to be sure... do we need to make sure it is the non-gel kind or does that matter?

I think that is fine for the head. You can use Quick Gel, which is alright if ingested, but its not an antiseptic, but helps with healing.

Poor little guy...
I use Polisporin (spelling? :-)) and it works just fine.

Once away from the plucker, your baby will heal very rapidly :-), which is a good thing.

Look at my little fella in the plucked stage and after a couple of weeks or there abouts.

Thank you so much for the pics! Good to know the time away speeds the healing too. Yes, the plucker is none too happy about this separation...LOL.

Poor girl tho, she's just in need of a mate of her own species and has been buddying up with this guy and getting a little too bossy for her own pants with him.

I'm sure we'll have him fixed up in no time at all :D

They SHOULD heal faster when they are separated... unless you are my bird... and you get worse.... Sorry, my baby has some issues with her head too... she looked like night of the living dead, blood all over her head, and they were only alone for 2 hours!!! I separated her, and now the other side is all opened... Hope your baby heals up nice.... and soon.... good luck.

I don't think I would do that, as AIL is a pesticide (permethrin). Even though it is safe to use around birds, even baby birds, I still would not think you should spray it on a raw spot.
