how many finches can I cage in this bird cage without causing any problems?

No more than two. The bigger the cage, the better, and the longer (wider) the cage, the better, as finches need to be able to fly.

I use bigger & wider cages than this one for even a single pair of finches for good exercise and stronger health.

Ideally, a good size cage for two finches, is 30L/18W/18H inches (with bigger always better. Finches, unlike Budgies (who climb), get their exercise through flying back and forth , so the longer the flight area, the better it is for their well being.

Here in Sweden we have a law stating that the smallest cage size for birds up to 20cm in length (7,8 inch) is L 70 cm x W 45 cm x H 60 cm (27,5 inch x 17,7 inch x 23,6 inch). I don't know if there is these kinds of laws in other countries.

No laws like that in Canada (and I'm not aware, of any such laws anywhere else).

I really have a problem, when I go into the pet shops, and see these tiny little cages for sale (something like 10×12 inches), and I think of some poor bird, having to live their whole life in an inclosure like that. I wish the companies would stop making these things.

Sadly they sell small cages here to even if they are not legal to have birds in them and sadly the pet stores are not great at informing about the law (even if they have too) and a lot of people don't know about it or don't care.
My birds came from a home were they sat in a small cage and it took the female (she is 2-3 years) some time before she could fly properly (the male who is younger can fly better) and she is still hesitant sometimes.

Yes, it is sad.
I find that there is this stupid false idea going around (and this is not a new idea), that Canaries do well in small cages, and that male Canaries will sing better in tiny cages. I was even told by a long time breeder, that if a Canary, has too much room to fly and move around too much, he will not concentrate on his singing. I couldn't believe it, and just shook my head at the stupidly.

I've had a few arguments with people about this.

They have apparently not listen to my canary male, he sings more intensive and higher and more sins they moved in to the large cage.

And a long time ago when I had to sell one of my canaries because he never stopped singing and he sung so high I got migraines and they had there cage open almost all day long and free to fly in my room.

I've heard that about Canaries... of course I had a hard time believeing it because they are so similar to finches in so many ways.... Even if that were what others considered "best for singing" I still couldn't do it.... I would rather a silent canary then a cramped one....:shaking head in disgutst:

Actually even budgies need to fly and exercise their wings. Personally I won't keep them in anything smaller than 3' long (they are bigger birds than finches and thus need more space) - and 2' or more high so they can climb as well.

I know lots of people do - but lots of people keep them in those tweety-bird cages too. People even keep canaries in those tiny cages still.
