a foraging box for two zebras?

Post by rayeast » Sat Feb 27, 2016 9:24 pm

I've seen mention of foraging boxes made for larger birds than finches. Seems like an interesting idea to give them an activity that might challenge them a little more. My two are having a great time with their food but they seem happiest when they are pulling or tugging or dragging around their greens or millet twigs and such. ???

A foraging box, is not difficult to put together.

All you need, is a Tupperware container.

In this container, you can place a few rocks, some twigs, some Timothy hay, bits of spray millet, some wild grass seed heads, a few seeds, some crushed egg shells, bits of shredded paper, even the occasional meal worm.... just use your imagination.

Most birds, enjoy foraging around on the ground for bits of this an that. It's fun for them, and does keep them busy.

A foraging box can contain anything basically.
Are your guys getting into it, and 'foraging' ? That's the whole idea. It's like a toy box/snack bar for the kids.

I periodically change things in there to keep things interesting, adding this or that when I'm cleaning it out (become things do become poopalized).

Poopalized to say the least. Not sure yet.. I just put it out last night as they were settling in for bed... So I'll have to check things out tonight I'll have more time to sit in there and watch them, or just peak on them,... I hope they do, I know when I did this when they were in cages (i'd put all the grass and hide stuff in it on the bottom of the cage) they LOVED it... So hopefully they will find the box, and the planter and utilize it, I just felt like they needed something to do all day... especially now with daylight savings their days are getting longer, and will keep getting longer for the next couple months!! Thanks Elana! <3 I'll let you know if they use it or not... [-o<
