Re: I finally have my 2 Male Gouldian finches ~
Funny thing with my two Gouldians ----- they don't like to go down to the bottom of the cage much. They come down to take a drink of water each morning, but that's about it. I will have to try and entice them down with food. There is a large Crock of water on the bottom, but only one finch uses it to drink from.

The more you put down on the bottom the more they will go there. It's good that they fly up and down as much as side to side for proper muscle tone.

Well, Today I put down on the bottom of the cage a plate of sliced cucumber and Spring salad greens sprinkled with seed ......
So far
neither Ricky or Fred is interested in this plate of fresh food....
So far

Could you find out what they were getting fed at the place they came from? I have heard it is hard to get finches to try new foods unless they are young? That might help at least until they get settled.

Re: I finally have my 2 Male Gouldian finches ~
Well, I have by this time now had my 2 Male Gouldians almost 3-months. It has been fun and interesting owning them. I'm still learning and I enjoy reading the many postings here on the forum -
I'm fascinated by Diet and Nutrition and am constantly reading up on
topics having to do with proper Diets, foods, etc. for my Gouldians.
I have only 2 birds. They are in a flight cage in my Living room.
Both are Male. So, with that being said, I am not going to be a
bird breeder, and I'm not going to have a large indoor or outdoor
Aviary. I guess I am considered a Bird Hobbyist. I do spend a lot of
time "observing" my 2 Gouldian finches, watching their behavior and
eating habits.
I feed them a dry, commercial Egg Food (Quiko brand), as well as
certain specific seeds such as Red Siberian Millet, and Canary Grass Seed, both of which I have read are highly nutritious. I do not offer them fruits and vegetables - I gave up on that awhile ago, as my 2 Gouldians refused to eat them. I don't know if fresh foods were offered to them at the Bird Store where I bought them, but I highly doubt that they ate fresh food there either. I offer them spray Millet 2x per week only.
I also supply with them 'Hearty Bird' Vitamin/Mineral formula daily in their drinking water.
Yes, I am a Bird Hobbyist. I'm not a bird breeder. I think my 2 finches are healthy. They are active, and vocal and a true joy to have in my home. They are beautiful to look at. I'm amazed at their beauty.
I'm so glad I got back into having birds in my home ........

Sounds like your really enjoying your birds and well on your way.
I don't offer veggies and fruit either though I do offer greens that are in season such as chicory, dandelion and wild grass seeds.
best of luck

Hello JerseyGuy,
You're a bird keeper, like most of us. Really glad you're enjoying your birds, and the nutrition aspect is engaging and critical to that enjoyment.
Cheers!

Yes, Ricky & Fred ..... LOL, they are very bonded, Hahahaha, but they do "spat" and jab at one another, but they are quite happy together.

You appear to be really doing well now and learning fast as regards to diet and nutrition,
Diet and nutrition happens to be one of my specialities within bird keeping

You don't necessarily need to breed and have loads of birds to be a bird keeper,
I personally know some very very experienced foreign Softbill breeders not to far from me and keep birds like sunbirds, suger birds and tanagers etc and hardly ever breed any birds but just the keeping of some of these birds is very time consuming and enough work in itself and I know this only to well as I've also dabbled around with a few softbills aswell over the years and because of this I'd class em as dedicated and experienced bird keepers,
your diet appears to be ok Patrick, I'm not sure how often you feed fruit and vegetables etc but me personally I'd only perhaps feed a small amount say once a week should be sufficient,
If you feed this to often the birds feacies will be rather watery,
Keep up the good research mate

Hi Stuart - Well, I don't feed my 2 Gouldians any fruit or veggies.......They are on a seed-based diet. I give them commercial Egg food, and supplement their diet with 'Hearty Bird' Vitamin/Mineral supplement that goes in their drinking water.
So far my birds have refused to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.

I didn't quote your post, Debbie, I was replying to Stuart, so your posting should not have even been included in my reply.
