franny - Ah, a coffee grinder may do the trick. I'll have to try that!

I tried a mortar and pestle, a food processor and even a pill crusher! LOL (The latter worked best, but it was too slow to be practical.)

I use a small dumbell and metal bowl

Empty the whole packet of pellets into bowl and smash it with the dumbell

dutch --- Ah, seems I wasn't so far off on my guess of a hammer and a pillowcase! LOL

Alas, I don't have any dumbbells. But I do have a sledgehammer.
Though a coffee grinder seems the least labor intensive!

I smash the whole packet at once..then pour it back in

That way you don't have to keep making a fresh batch everyday
