Spice finch sex
My spice finch will occasionally make a chirp chirp chirp sound, but not often. I have read the male song varies. Do females chirp at all? Thank you.

Re: Spice finch sex
My pair was very quiet. If you are familiar with Society finches the male Spice finch does a little puffy dance that is quite similar. Their song is very quiet though. I had to actually catch the male in the act to be sure that little sound was him. It reminds me of a very tiny warbler or lark. It's a liquid, whisper-y sort of sound. But when you actually see the male singing and not just hear him it is unmistakable. I don't really recall the hen ever making any noise other than the occasional chirp or an alarm call. Mine also never reproduced. He'd sing and dance and she'd ignore him or fly away. I never witnessed mating and while they slept with the Society pair they shared a cage with, I've heard it is best to let a group of juveniles chose their own mates if you're really wanting to breed them.

Re: Spice finch sex
When I had Spice finches, the males make a very soft warbling song, as Colt mentioned. It is very difficult to hear the song, unless the room is totally quiet. You can observe the throat moving and they puff up slightly. My Spice pair had several clutches, with about 6 juveniles raised successfully. The hens just make a call or chirp, but it is not loud either.
BTW- Spice will hybridize with Society finches, so I would keep them in separate cages if you are breeding.

Re: Spice finch sex
I had a spice finch pair and they were silent. I never, ever heard them vocalize.
They were also seemingly asexual.
They never showed any interest in mating. Never flirted, nor flirted back when another would try to woo them.
I suspect mine were both females.
They got along with others beautifully and they had mates, but it was more of a companion/friend mate vs a mating pair.
Wonderful if you live in an apartment and need quiet birds!
