I have one forbes parrot finch and its obviously a female. I wasn't planning on breeding just yet and have her in a mixed cage with cordon bleus, waxbills and a few other types. I have a couple of nests hanging at the top of the cages and was going through them today and found 2 eggs in each one. I had noticed earlier that the forbes was the only one spending time in those nests. Is it normal for females to lay eggs even if there is no male of the same species around? Also will parrot finches breed with other finches or will they mate only with their own kind?

I have a goldfinch x canary and they aren't even fertile and she doesn't stop laying eggs, it is in the same aviary with only some waxbills and grassfinches. So, yes it could be possible for your forbes to lay eggs even though there aren't any other parrot finches in the same cage.

Parrot finches can crossbreed. I've seen advertisements of red-eared parrotfinch but actually they were just crossbreeds between blue faced and red headed parrotfinches.

Look out housing gouldians with parrot finches, a gouldian is technically a parrot finch too. They aren't as likely to crossbreed as the other species of parrotfinches, but it's still possible.

Thanks for that info wessel. Its good to know and I do have gouldians and blue faced also but they are in separate cages. I may be picking up some red throated parrots this weekend if the price is right. Thanks again.

The female of any species of finch can lay eggs without a male but obviously the eggs are infertile. I think the Forbes parrot finch are beautiful and you should get a mate for it! :D
