Zebra dynamics

Post by Poe » Thu Sep 18, 2014 2:59 pm

Hello all! I am in a zebra quandary. I have mama and her 5 chicks in an A&E double flight. So that's four males and two females. We have the typical zebra squabbling going on. Mama doesn't appear particularly attached to any babies. I have an opportunity to adopt out 2 birds to a great home. This would leave four birds. I have read somewhere that two pairs is not good- three is better. Is this true? I really want them to have as much room as possible and would prefer 4 birds. Second part of the question is which four to keep. Would it be better to give away mama and daughter and keep the four boys. Or should I give away two boys and keep mama, daughter, and two boys? No more clutches in our future. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I would keep the four males, if they're siblings. If you mean 3 sons and dad, that could still be a problem as the father often pick on their own kiddos. If the person who wants two is not breeding, than give them two of the baby boys. Then, you have mom and dad as a pair and the other two you can either get a mate for, since they are siblings, or sell them too, but not as a pair.

The concept of three pairs, is Male/Female pairs, rather than two pairs of even numbers. If that makes senses.

Thanks for the quick reply Deborah. Dad is not in the picture. It's just momma, four sons and one daughter.
