our funny looking goulcian chicks

Post by yargnits » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:14 pm

so we asked a while ago about the our chicks as they looked a bit different to what we were expecting.
we got some great info and really appreciate it so i thought it would be nice to post them as they are now.

one of the yellow chicks (purple breast one) seems to have alot of green mixed with the yellow).
we were told the yellows were female because they are yellow and i think the other two white breasted birds are female too. we also have a dilute male as was suggested when we first asked but i couldnt get a pic of him.

are all white breasted birds female ?

heres the pics :

No to your question.....all white breasts are not hens.

the male parent is a dilute male with a red face and purple breast ( we didnt know he was dilute until we asked about the chicks on here ).

the mother was a red head purple breast normal looking bird although her face was mostly black appart from a small patch of red near the eyes

i think the adult dilute male is quite old though and we were lucky to get the chicks which hapily included a dilute male almost identical to his dad :-)

With a RH.PB.SF Pastel male and RH.PB.Normal hen you would not get any WB chicks. So, if any chicks are WB then you know that BOTH parents are split to WB. This also means that male WB chicks can be yellow body if they are SF.

this is more complicated than i thought lol.

we were told the yellow chick would be female so i assumed they were.

now im not sure and its getting harder to have any clue about what might be male or female or what we should keep !

once gouldians have paired up is it difficult to mate them with another partner ?

is WC a typo ?
ive got the red head purple breast bit and the single phase i know from other help from this site but the " /w . GB " im not sure about and WC (which i think should be WB ? ).

thanks for clearing that up and for everyones help.
i dont want anyone to go to too much trouble but how do the black headed chicks factor in ? the list above shows all red headed chicks but two have black heads. does that make any difference to anything or is it just random that they might have black faces?

thanks sam we think they are lovely too but were having difficulty working out which ones we should keep and which ones to let go as we like them all because of the veriety ! :-)

Dad must be split to Black Head (RH/b) and any black head babies will be female

So the father is actually RH/BH PB/WB SF YB Pastel (shows as dilute)

I write my abbreviations differently than Dolly. But it's basically the same thing. You have a bunch of pretty birds. Congrats on the clutch.
