Traveling

Post by Claire+Charlie » Sun Dec 07, 2014 12:41 am

I am about to go back home for Christmas break and it is only a short 45 minute drive, but Claire and Charlie's eggs should be hatching the weekend I'm planning to go home. Would it be better to drive them home early before the eggs hatch, or wait until they have hatched to move them??

That's a tough one. Usually, any change while birds are sitting on eggs will cause them to abandon. On the other hand, if you wait till the eggs hatch, the parents may stop feeding once you make the move. It's really hard to say which is the best decision, either one may end up with the parents abandoning the eggs/babies. But sometimes birds will surprise us and go right on like nothing happened, who knows?

If you are that close, I would leave them there and go home each day to feed etc. Otherwise the pair will likely abandon eggs and/or babies.

Sally :( I was worried that would be the case. This is hard, I've been getting so excited for these babies. I think I am going to take them home this weekend as eggs and my parents can keep a close eye on them until next week when I come home. I honestly am hopeful though because the couple has barely gotten off of those eggs for a second since they were laid and they were never quite that attentive with their previous eggs. It wasn't until I put a snack in today that they switched places and I was able to even see how many eggs there are! I'm hoping they want them as much as I do! Fingers crossed! [-o<

finchmix22 That is an idea... just a lot of gas :/ I may look into finding someone here I could pay to check on them daily when I can't make it if I leave them here

I would see if you can find a pet sitter.

If it's just 2-3 days, you could even stock their cage with tons of food and water. I know lots of people do that when they're going away just for a weekend.

I'd try to do whatever you need to do to avoid moving them.
In addition to causing them to abandon, you also risk egg cooling during the ride. If they don't sit during the ride, the eggs would cool and die. And 45 min is long enough to cause fatal cooling.
The only thing you could do is to put them in the front seat and blast the heat, hoping to keep the ambient temp in the 90s. I think that may slow cooling enough to allow for survival.

If you absolutely must move them, I'd do it while they're in-egg.
