Hi everyone, hope you are all having a good weekend. Im new to this forum but am finding my way around bit by bit. I put some news on recently about starting to rear Finches and i have just found out how to upload some pics of my baby so here goes. Sorry if theyre not perfect lol.

lenny. Very cute, I love Zebs. (my first finches) They are adorable when they are little like that. My babies are 7 weeks old this week, and LOUD little pains in the butt, just like their Mom and Dad (still love them though ) But Welcome to the forum!! Did you say you hand fed this baby? He has no "bird" parents? And there is only one, no siblings, or other birds for him to learn from? (sorry the pics are a little blury so I had a hard time seeing them) Anyways, good luck!! He's adorable!

Hi Inlovesorange, in answer to your comment. The baby does have parents in the cage with it but unfortunately no siblings as he was the only egg out of 3 to hatch. The baby is almost 4 weeks old now and hopefully will be moving to another cage with another bird very soon. The mother has already started another batch and we have 3 eggs at the minute. It looks like we may have some more eggs as she is very big so maybe get another 1 or 2 from her. We have another 4 cages at home so there will be plenty of room for the new batch when they are old enough.

Well we now have 5 eggs in the second batch so hopefully fingers crossed all 5 will hatch into healthy chicks.I went to a bird show today in Nottingham and came home with a Bengalese cock and three other Finches(2 hens 1 cock) but forgot to ask what they were. will put pics up later and would appreciate any suggestions as to what they are.

Here are 2 pics of my new birds, can anyone confirm the breed. I am sure they are Bengalese but i may be wrong.

My Zebs have laid another batch of 6 eggs and the hen doesnt seem to want to sit on them, the last egg was laid 20th April. Could it be to early for the next batch or would it have anything to do with the chick from the last batch s still in the cage with the parents.The chick is just over 1 mth old.

It's really tough to see the photos, it looks like the top picture is a society finch. The bottom picture, the white one w/ black tear marks (if the rest of the body is white) looks like a CFW female zebra, and the one next to her, could be a Society, but the pictures are a little blury, and I'm NO expert!!! I'm sure some more will chime in to let you know!!! More pics if you get a chance, as these are a little tough to see!!! But from what I can tell, they look to be little beauties!!! Congrats. Btw how's baby Zebra coming along? Also, about the zebras not sitting, if she is still new to the process it could be that, sometimes it takes them a few clutches of eggs to get it down. Also, are they being fed a varied diet lots of protein (egg food) vitamin d3 and calcium? Also do they get sunlight or UV rays (from a bulb) where you have them. I have read on here many times that simple lighting changes (adding light) can make all the difference when breeding. Again, good luck!!!

Hi orange, we have now moved baby into its own cage with a mature bird and they seem to be getting along fine. Baby is now feeding itself and seems to be more alert and cheerful. We have a variety of foods in the cages, ie, seed, egg food,greens, cuttlebone and also some protien food called Cunipic complete food and lastly millet. We have 8 birds now including baby in 4 cages and each cage has all of the above food included. They have plenty of sunlight, when we get it lol,and i have lights near all the cages.Yesterday she laid her 8th egg in the 2nd batch but upon checking them it looks like they were all infertile so we have removed them and put 2 in with one of the other pairs.We will check the eggs again in 5 days time and see how they are.
I will get more clearer pics of the birds and get them on here, i know the white one with the tear marks is a Zeb hen but not 100% on other 3. Thx for your input its really helpful.

You have some pretty Society Finches (Bengalese Finches) there. As to the mutations, I'm not certain.

Oh they are beautiful I don't know much about Society mutations so I can't help you there at all. The top one at first glance I actually thought was a Spice Finch, but Elan knows her stuff, so I'm going with her that it's a Society. Also, just wanted to add that a lot of windows (not sure about in the UK, but here in the USA) filter UV rays. So if your birds are by a window they may be getting sunlight and warmth from it, but they may NOT be getting the benefits of the UV rays as the window could be filtering it out (which is why you can't get a tan through a window) but trust me I know what you mean, about the sun "when you get it" it's been a tough spring for us here in NEW England, hasn't been about 60 F... and we're coming into May!!! And April showers brings May flowers is one thing, but it's getting alittle ridiculous here, I mean we are New England, NOT England!!! lol Anyways... wasn't sure if you knew that about the UV rays from the sun (I didn't before I joined this forum) so I wanted to let you know! Again good luck with the birds, and keep us posted if any of the eggs end up viable and you end up awaiting hatchlings!!! We Love babies around here!!!
